When should you use an ovulation test?
- Irregular cycle: if you have an irregular cycle, using ovulation tests will help to determine when you are ovulating and whether ovulation is occurring in your body during the cycle.
- Fertility problems (e.g. PCOS): sperm have a lifespan of around 72 hours, while recent research suggests that the egg has a lifespan of only 12-18 hours. It is therefore very important to time your intercourse well to achieve pregnancy. The ovulation test can be used to determine the ideal time for intercourse, thus significantly increasing the chances of getting pregnant.
- However, ovulation tests are recommended for all women who are planning to have a baby and want to do everything possible to ensure that they have a healthy baby. The timing of intercourse is not only important in case of pregnancy problems, but can also play a role in preventing miscarriages and foetal abnormalities. If the timing of intercourse is not right, an over-ripe and over-aged egg can be fertilised, which can lead to the problems mentioned above.
- Early detection of pregnancy with good testing: there is a lesser-known use of ovulation tests: early detection of pregnancy. The LH and HCG hormones are structurally similar and may cross-react on the tests. The presence of pregnancy can therefore be detected by LH testing before the absence of menstruation.
- How the test works: higher levels of LH (average 3-15 mIU/mL) are detected by immunochromatography in urine. This level rises to around 200 IU/L before ovulation. The test is calibrated to detect positivity above 30 mIU/L, i.e. it is sensitive to the elevated range.
