Serum amyloid amyloid (SAA) is also a rapidly responding acute phase marker, similar to CRP levels. The increase in acute phase SAA increases within a few hours after the inflammatory stimulus and the increase in concentration may be more pronounced than the increase in CRP. Simple inflammatory diseases often cause elevated SAA levels. It has been described that in the early stages of inflammatory diseases, SAA levels correlate better with changes in disease activity than ESR and CRP. SAA is largely produced by liver cells, although recent studies have also shown that it is produced by adipocytes, and therefore serum concentrations of SAA are related to body mass index.
