Details
Procalcitonin (PCT) is a small protein of 116 amino acid residues with a molecular weight of 13 kDa, published by Moullec et al. in 1984. PCT is produced in C-cells of the thyroid gland. In 1993, a correlation between elevated PCT and systemic bacterial infection was recognized, with the result that PCT levels are now a biomarker for systemic infection and sepsis. The diagnostic value of PCT levels is enhanced by the correlation between PCT levels and infection severity. PCT produced by inflammatory processes is not produced in C cells but in neuroendocrine cells.
