Details
D-dimer (or D dimer) is the degradation product of fibrin (or FDP), a small protein fragment that appears in the blood after fibrinolysis of the clot. It is so named because it contains two cross-linked D fragments of the fibrin protein. D-dimer concentrations can be detected by blood tests, which aid in the diagnosis of thrombosis. Since the 1990s it has become a very important test for the diagnosis of thrombotic diseases. A negative result virtually rules out the possibility of thrombosis, a positive result may indicate thrombosis but does not exclude other potential causes. Therefore, its most important role is to exclude thrombosis where the likelihood is low. Furthermore, the test can be used in the diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulopathy.
