Details
Amphetamine is a Schedule II controlled prescription, potent sympathomimetic drug (Dexedrine®) with therapeutic indications. It is also available on the illicit market. Chemically similar to naturally occurring catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine) in the human body. In acute high doses, it causes increased stimulation of the central nervous system, increased euphoria, alertness and increased feelings of energy and power, while appetite is reduced. Cardiovascular effects of amphetamines include increased blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmias. Acute use causes anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations and psychotic behaviour. The effects of amphetamines usually last 2-4 hours and the half-life of the drug is 4-24 hours. About 30% of amphetamines are excreted in the urine in their unchanged form, the remainder being hydroxylated and deaminated derivatives. The AMP Rapid Test Strip (Urine), a rapid urine sample screening test that does not require an instrument, uses a monoclonal antibody to selectively detect elevated levels of amphetamine in urine. If amphetamine in urine exceeds 1000 ng/ml, the AMP Rapid Test Strip (urine) will give a positive result.
