ECG
Electrocardiography (ECG) is a diagnostic procedure used to monitor and evaluate the electrical and muscular function of the heart. The contraction of parts of the heart is coordinated by electrical impulses to ensure that the blood flows in the right way. During an ECG scan, electrodes are placed at specific points on the chest, arms and legs and connected by wires to the ECG machine, which records the impulses. The test can provide important information about, for example, possible narrowing of the coronary arteries, heart attack or irregular heartbeat.
In general, there are 3 types of test: resting, stress or long-term. Resting is done in a comfortable, lying position, for the stress test a bicycle or treadmill is used, and the long-term - also known as holter ECG - is done using a portable, body-worn device. Resting ECGs can be stand-alone monitors, PC-connected, handheld or portable.
