Artificial Respiration and Intubation
Artificial respiration is a procedure used to maintain airflow to and from the patient's lungs when natural breathing reflexes are absent or inadequate. Such cases include respiratory depression, respiratory paralysis, asphyxia, gas or smoke inhalation. There are several types of devices to initiate and maintain breathing by mechanical ventilation of the lungs.
Intubation is a procedure used in emergency situations when the patient cannot breathe on their own or during anaesthesia. It is usually done through the mouth, less commonly through the nose. The procedure uses a laryngoscope to insert a flexible tube into the patient's windpipe and connect it to a ventilator.
