What is body composition analysis?
Body composition is made up of four main components - protein, body water, fat and minerals, each of which makes up the total mass. Body composition varies greatly with age, gender and physical characteristics and is therefore very closely linked to health problems. Body composition analysis helps you to see what you are made of and manage your health by properly analysing your exact body composition. You get analysis results on muscle development, nutritional balance and obesity levels. Body composition analysis provides a wealth of clinical insights to help correct poor eating habits or prevent disease - and an equally useful basis for patient diet design and recovery.
How is the body built?
See below for a model of the body elements. Weight is divided into two categories: fat mass and fat-free mass, and FFM is again divided into three sub-categories: minerals, protein and body water. All of these need to be balanced and in equilibrium to maintain good health.
Why is body composition analysis important?
Healthy people are generally able to maintain a standard range of body composition. If the balance is upset, it can lead to various diseases, or vice versa.
Obesity-related issues are usually a fair share of our interest in body composition. According to the WHO (World Health Organisation), obesity requires a clinical, internal approach rather than simply being seen as a big external issue. Obesity is a growing clinical concern, which is more related to internal problems such as adult and heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. Clinical discretion is therefore needed to keep a large percentage of the body under tight control.
Protein in nutrition is closely linked to the nutritional status of a person. If the nutrients needed for survival are not taken in properly, it can cause nutritional problems in the body. More specifically, muscle cells are broken down to be used as an alternative energy source, damaging your health. Excessive dietary restriction can also destroy protein and muscle tissue.
A typical symptom associated with mineral problems is osteoporosis, which is very common among post-menopausal women. Osteoporosis is usually caused by bone mineral deficiency and can be detected by a professional bone densitometer such as DEXA. The loss of minerals in bone is also closely linked to muscle mass, and maintaining adequate muscle mass through proper exercise regimes can help prevent osteoporosis.
