To ensure the safety of patients, healthcare workers and the environment, medical equipment and devices must be properly cleaned, disinfected and sterilised.
Sterilisation procedures destroy all micro-organisms. Methods used include steam, heat, gas sterilisation, ozone and radiation.
Autoclaves - also known as steam sterilizers - use water, pressure and heat to create superheated steam that removes microorganisms and spores. Hot-air sterilisation can be used for devices that are heat-resistant, as it requires higher temperatures to kill bacteria and micro-organisms than steam sterilisation under the same conditions. Germicidal lamps are suitable for effective disinfection of air, water and non-porous surfaces. The germicidal action of UV-C light sources helps to achieve sterile conditions in healthcare facilities.
